Project Spotlight: Cabinetry That Makes A Difference

There are many reasons why I can say I love what I do. One of the best feelings is knowing I helped give my clients a special place in their home that completely blew away their expectations.

I recently worked with a couple located in New Hampshire on their kitchen remodel. It was an exciting project to be a part of because I was able to use a variety of cabinet options CliqStudios.com offers. This project also proved just how important kitchens cabinets are: they can have a huge positive impact or be a huge disappointment.

The couple moved into their rambler-style home a year ago and had a kitchen remodel on their radar since day one. When they contacted me at CliqStudios.com, they were motivated and ready to get their project started. After I saw the kitchen the couple was replacing, I got motivated too. The cabinets were from the home?s original construction about 20 years ago and were cheap, dated laminate with wood trim. It was quickly apparent that the quality of the cabinetry didn?t match the quality of the home.

At the beginning, we determined that the clients were happy with the kitchen?s size and floor plan. It had great functionality, and plenty of countertop space and good walkways made the space great for entertaining. This project was a classic example of a kitchen that had good bones but just needed updated and improved cabinets.

My clients? main goal was to have a kitchen that had furniture quality and was true to the traditional style of their home. They selected the Carlton Cherry Russet cabinet from CliqStudios.com, which is a raised-panel door with a mitered waterfall edge profile in a rich traditional brown finish. I knew these cabinets were going to bring a dramatic, night-and-day difference to their kitchen.

The couple was convinced CliqStudios.com was a good choice for their cabinetry. Their contractor was skeptical, however, having seen the quality of other online kitchen cabinets suppliers. When I sent over the plans, both parties were pleasantly surprised with the kitchen design. The contractor?s jaw dropped, I was told.

The new kitchen design wasn?t a major departure from the original because we had to stay within the boundaries of the existing footprint. However, we did use the space more wisely. To be perfectly honest, one of my goals is to rid the world of soffits, and luckily we were able to in this kitchen. We were able to open up the space visually, increase storage, extend the upper cabinets to the ceiling, and top them with beautiful crown molding that lends itself so well to traditional homes.

I love when I?m able to fit a wood hood into a kitchen, and fortunately this kitchen had plenty of countertop space and enough ceiling height for a hood. It added a nice, warm and homey focal point. On the lower cabinets and on the large kitchen island, we used lots of drawers as well as roll-out trays to make the kitchen functional and easy to work in.

Originally, the back wall of the kitchen was a solid wall of cabinetry, which provided tons of storage but zero functionality beyond that. In its place, we added upper and lower cabinets with a long beautiful granite counter that opens to the dining room. What once provided little use is now a great focal point for entertaining. At the far left end of the wall next to the dining room, we placed a built-in desk for a kitchen command center.

Even though the process lasted a short two and one half weeks, I walked away from it feeling that we explored all options. It was a real one-shot wonder and the clients were thrilled with the results. They loved the design and so did I.
